military service obligations in Korea

In South Korea, military service is mandatory for most able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28. This requirement is based on the country's conscription system, which was established as a response to security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict with North Korea. South Korea technically remains in a state of war with North Korea since the Korean War (1950-1953) ended in an armistice, not a formal peace treaty.

Duration of Service: The typical mandatory military service period is around 18 to 21 months, depending on the branch of the military and specific circumstances. Exemptions and Deferrals: Some individuals may be exempted from or have their military service deferred due to various reasons, such as health issues, academic pursuits (higher education), or special skills in fields like sports or the arts. Alternative Service: Those who are deemed unfit for active duty due to medical reasons but are still capable of some form of service may be assigned to alternative roles, such as working in public service. Dual Citizenship: South Korean men who hold dual citizenship (with certain countries) may be able to choose between South Korean military service and alternative forms of service, depending on the agreements in place.

RM is the same age as J-Hope and is planning to enlist soon to fulfill his military duty.
